The Calcutta Football League having a history for over 100 years is a tournament constituted with clubs from West Bengal, and considered to be one of the oldest football tournaments of Asia. Despite many teams especially from Kolkata and across the diverse land of Bengal participating in each season, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan have been the glorious among all to have more than 30 seasons to their name.
For past 38 years these two arch-rival clubs have been restricting other clubs from conquering the title. However, the ongoing season of CFL saw a distinct attempt by Mohammedan Sporting to dismiss Mohun Bagan from the title race from such a stage, from where the club has little regain the momentum for title race.
38years back, Mohammedan Sporting was the last club to be crowned in CFL, but after that the Red & Yellow and on the other hand, Green and Marron brigade destroyed any chance other teams had. Walking on the path of 12th title win this year, Mohammedan Sporting on Thursday, in a shocker left the 30times champion, stunned on the ground with a 3-2 win over the defending champions.
The Mohammedan Sporting showed a strong attack combined with a well devised defense to tackle their lead, with two early goals to their side, as Kareem Omolaja Nurain (7th) and Tirthankar Sarkar (11th) tore through Mohun Bagan defense. Though, Joseba Beitia managed to find a loophole to score a goal in the 25th minute, but the two goal lead seemed like a tough task to neutralize.
In the 2nd half of the game, Mohammedan SC took another chance to increase the lead further in the 61st minute, John Chidi scoring another goal. Mohun Bagan with a lot to achieve to remain in the title clash from the 5th position they are currently positioned in, desperately found a chance in the 71st minute to increase the tally to 3-2. But Mohammedan SC did not let them neutralize the lead further or topple the scoreboard, with a remarkable defense in the end.
Two new champions are inching closer steadily towards the CFL title of 2019, Peerless at top with 17 points, and Mohammedan Sporting just behind with 16 points. Mohun Bagan after a disappointing season constituting of 2 losses and 3 wins are at 5th position, with 14 points. East Bengal just above their arch-rivals with the same points. The 3rd slot is occupied by Bhowanipore SC.
