Why does stomach cancer occur? What are the symptoms? How much do lifestyle and diet contribute to the disease? Is stomach cancer completely curable? Insights were shared by cancer specialist Dr. Oindrila Biswas (MBBS, MS, MCh in Surgical Oncology).
Why does stomach cancer occur?
Stomach cancer primarily occurs due to two reasons:
1. Genetic Factors:
This type of cancer can be hereditary. If a family member was diagnosed with stomach cancer before the age of 50, the subsequent generations in the family may have a higher risk of developing the disease.
2. Non-Modifiable Causes:
One of the major reasons is the ‘Helicobacter pylori’ infection, commonly referred to as gastritis. It can later progress into cancer. This often results from unhealthy dietary habits, such as consuming unclean, oily, or charred foods.
What are the main symptoms of stomach cancer?
The initial symptoms of stomach cancer are often subtle and easily overlooked:
1. Gastritis issues
2. Bloating after meals
3. Significant weight loss
4. Loss of appetite
5. Vomiting after eating
6. Fluid accumulation in the stomach
Is stomach cancer completely curable?
Modern treatments for stomach cancer are highly advanced. Patients in stages one to three can recover if they receive proper treatment.
1. The treatment starts with chemotherapy.
2. Surgery is performed to remove toxic substances from the body.
3. Chemotherapy is administered again to ensure complete treatment.
However, patients in stage four have lower chances of a complete cure. Even then, treatments aim to improve their quality of life.
How can this disease be prevented through lifestyle changes?
1. Reduce the consumption of outside food.
2. Avoid unclean or contaminated food.
3. Limit charred or burnt food intake.
4. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables.
Which age group is most affected by stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer can occur at any age but is most commonly observed in people between 50 to 60 years old.
