The covid-19 pandemic created a ruckus all over the world, leaving people utterly confused with what to do and what not to do. So was the case for the people of Bengal as well. However it is because of people like Dr. Kunal Sarkar that things started making sense and people started understanding the new normal scenario with the Coronavirus stepping in. Dr. Kunal Sarkar has been with the people of Bengal, making people familiar with the Covid-19 situation and making them aware of the consequences of the virus if proper precautions are not taken. He’s not just a doctor but a noted citizen of the city of Kolkata for such reasons. Currently he is the Vice-Chairman and the chief cardiac surgeon of Medica Super-speciality Hospital. Jiyo Bangla meets Doctor Kunal Sarkar and figures out how to stay safe from the deadly covid-19 virus and lead a normal life.
Q. The covid-19 pandemic has changed the entire scenario for the city. What challenges are you people facing?
A: Earlier we used to treat life-style diseases; however the scenario has changed now. The natures of diseases have changed with the advancement of time and a lot of them are now easily treatable. Nowadays, it is the life style diseases that are the main concern. In addition to that the covid-19 pandemic has made us wonder how to fight it. It has put us in a situation where we ourselves have been confused over what step to undertake to fight this disease. However, in spite of that, during the first two waves I have operated on 3-4 covid patients. This situation has made us learn a lot and we have had to adapt accordingly.
Q. Apart from the other variants of covid, Omicron has spread uncontrollably. What precautions should be taken to stay safe from Omicron?
A: Omicron is one of the variants of the Coronavirus and it has undergone a few genetic changes that have made it even more transmissible than its other variants. So we need to be extra careful.
Q. Do you think people are not conscious and aware of the current scenario?
A: People are now much more aware of the on-going scenario, things are getting much better.
Q. A lot of people face difficulties in wearing masks. Should they wear masks?
A: Only masks cannot stop the virus from spreading, it only stops the droplets from spreading. Masks are unable to stop the spread of the virus through air as a result of which masks cannot be the only medium to stop the spread of the covid-19 virus. However it is a basic requirement.
Q. Will the chances of contracting the virus post vaccination go down?
A: Vaccination cannot stop the contraction of the virus. Out of 100, 50 people can contract the virus even after being fully vaccinated. But vaccination is important.
Q. Considering the current scenario how aware should the common people be?
A: We have to live our daily lives with the presence of the covid-19 virus. But we have to maintain standard Covid protocols laid out by the health professionals.
