Today we are going to tell you about the Itachuna Rajbari which is also known as ‘Bargee Danga’. The term Bargee has been derived from the same name given to the Maratha warriors by the people of Bengal. The Bargees came to Bengal in the seventeenth century and the palace was built in 1766 by the ancestors of Safallya Narayan Kundan; who was the fourth generation of those Maratha Warriors. The palace derived its name from ita- meaning brick and chuna- meaning lime.
The palace is now run by the 14th generation of Bargees, Dhruva Narayan, and Basav Narayan. To maintain the palace Dhruva Narayan and Basav Narayan has turned the palace into a heritage hotel. The palace is over 310-years-old. There are still rooms with furniture as old as the palace. The palace has been like many other palaces used as a movie set like ‘Rajmahal’ in Bengali and we all remember Ranveer Singh’s ‘Lootera’; it was also shot here in Itachuna Rajbari. It has its own garden and ‘Thakur dalan’ where every evening prayer is offered to the deity. There is also a ‘Shiva Mandir’ to the opposite of the palace.
