Which major sporting event coincided with this International Women’s Day?

On 8th March, people conveyed their wishes to the lovely females all over the world, but the day also marked the beginning of the Paralympics commonly known as “PyeongChang Paralympics” hosted by South Korea. Officially known as the XII Paralympic Winter Games, it is an international winter multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities.

Being unique in its own way, it gained a lot of attention worldwide and several countries had launched bids to host the event. The cities of Annecy, France, in the French Alps, Munich, Germany (host of the 1972 Summer Olympics), and Pyeongchang in South Korea, a two-time previous bidder competed for the hosting rights to the event. The winning bid was announced on 6th July, 2011 at the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa by IOC (International Olympics Committee) President Jacques Rogge.

This year Pyeongchang beat Munich and Annecy in the first round of votes with 63 of the 95 total votes.

The tickets went up for sale on 21 August, 2017 and by January 19, 2018 70% of the tickets were sold (155,000 tickets out of a total of 223,353 allocated). This winter Paralympics has been further subdivided into six sporting events:

  • Alpine skiing;
  • Biathlon;
  • Cross-country skiing;
  • Ice sledge hockey;
  • Snowboarding; and
  • Wheelchair curling.

Like any other sports event, PyeongChang Paralympics has a mascot which is Bandabi, an Asian black bear which symbolises strong will and strength.

We extend our greetings and good wishes to all the participants of 2018 Paralympics.
