India was ruled by the British for about two hundred years, but before them, Portuguese, French, and Greek also came to India. Calcutta was an important port that time foreigners came to India to trade. They have constructed several monuments and buildings and left their footprints. In Hooghly, Chandernagore and even in Kolkata you can find foreign architects; they can be found all over the country but there is one thing that is found only in Kolkata and nowhere else in the nation. The Greek Cemetery, which is found only in Kolkata. There are around 200 graves here in this cemetery. The cemetery started functioning from 1777. The earliest grave belongs Hadjee Alexias Argyree, who is believed to be the first Greek to set foot in Kolkata (then Calcutta). The most recent grave dates back to 2013 when a Greek Lady was buried there. Agrgyree also founded the first Orthodox Church of Kolkata, which was located at Amratollah. After that property was sold out the grave shifted to its present position at the Phoolbagan region. Alexias died in Dhaka (then Decca), his remains were carried back here and buried at the Greek Cemetery. There is a small chapel of Prophet Elias, the graves are in really bad shape but the government is taking measures to restore them and soon the work will start. There are graves with Greek inscriptions on them, a sculpture of a lady kneeling and holding on to a cross, a garden, and several other things are in ruins now; if restored that place will also be beautiful and add up to the already rich history of the city.
