Guru Purnima is celebrated as a festival by Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. On this Purnima, the devotees dedicate their devotion to all academic and spiritual gurus or teachers. The word ‘Guru’ has been derived from the Sanskrit root words ‘Gu’ and ‘Ru’. Gu means ‘darkness’ or ‘ignorance’, and Ru means ‘dispeller’.
Therefore, a guru is the dispeller of darkness or ignorance. He is the one who shows light when going through difficulties. The word guru is used for the teacher who teaches anything to a learner.
When is Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadha, which is from June to July. The festival is marked by Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains every year on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadha of the Hindu calendar, or the Ashadha Purnima Tithi.
This year, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on July 3.
The Purnima Tithi begins at 20:22 p.m. on July 2, 2023, and ends at 17:09 p.m. on July 3, 2023.
History And Significance Of Guru Purnima:
Maharshi Vyas is considered our ancient Guru. This famous festival, Guru Purnima, is celebrated as the birthday of Vyasa Ji. That is why we also know this day as Vyasa Purnima. We must consider our Gurus as part of Vyasa Ji and worship them.
It is said that Guru Vyasa wrote all the four Vedas that were recited by the Lord Brahma, and every person in this world is in debt for the work that Saint Vyasa did. He also wrote several Purans. And from those times on, a day was dedicated to the Gurus, and this day is called 'Guru Purnima’. The word purnima is used because on this day, there is a full moon.
It has deep significance in the past and in today’s world as well. As this day is dedicated to the Gurus, people, irrespective of caste, etc., offer their prayers to their gurus, thanking them for the knowledge they have provided to the learner.
How Will You Celebrate Guru Purnima?
On Guru Purnima Day, wake up early and perform the daily routine tasks like bathing, Puja, etc., and make sure that you wear good clothes. After that, offer flowers and a garland of good fragrance to the image of Vyasa Ji, and then visit your own Guru. Make your Guru sit on a chair or somewhere, and then offer a garland. After that, offer clothes, fruits, flowers, garland, and Dakshina in the form of some money to your Guru, and then take their blessings.
Guru Purnima marks the relationship between students and teachers. In today’s world, it has been said that teachers play the most important role in the lives of every student. Apart from imparting education and teaching other co-curricular and non-curricular skills, teachers also familiarise students with values and life skills that help them deal with the outside world once they become adults.
