Rabindranath Tagore and Rabindra Sangeet is something Bengalis love. Rabindranath is next to god for several Bengalis in India. Rabindranath Tagore has 2,230 songs which are not just sung but are even recited. His compositions are sung in various styles like Hindustani and Thumri and are even moulded into various raaga’s. Well, most Bengalis know almost everything about Rabindranath Tagore hence; there is nothing extraordinary to dig out about the noble laureate. What could be amazing about him, would be his compositions which have been moulded into hindi versions to be used in films. Yes, Rabindra sangeet has been moulded into hindi versions and have been filmed and even still today is, after 76 years of his death. He is still the icon. Some of the most famous Rabindra Sangeets which have been used in films are:
- ‘Shedin dujone dulechinu bone’ was used in Afsar which released in 1950. Sung by Suraiya for herself in the film in a unique style by using the raag pilu. The song ‘Nain dewane, ek nahin maane’ is a popular romantic song.
- Zalzala casting Dev Anand and Geeta Bali which released in 1952, used ‘Khoro bayu boy bege’and remade it to ‘Pawan chale zor’ which was sung by KL Saigal.
- Lata Mangeshkar had sung the moulded version of ‘Monomohor megher shongi’ – ‘Maan mera udta jaaye badal k sang’ in the film Maa Beta in 1962 pictured on Nirupa Roy.
- One of the most famous Amitabh-Jaya movies Abhimaan had a Rabindra Sangeet ‘Jodi tare nai chini go shey ki’ The Rabindra Sangeet was moulded to make ‘Tere mere Milan ki yeh raina.’
- ‘Chukar mere mann ko’ is another Tagore inspired song used in Bollywood which is a remake of the famous romantic Rabindra Sangeet ‘Tomar holo shuru,amar holo shara.’
- Nana Patekar starring Yughpurush released in 1998 used the famous Rabindra Sangeet ‘Tumi kemon kore gaan koro hey guni’. ‘Koi jaise mere dil ka dar khatkaye’ was pictured on Ashwini Bhave.
- ‘Bandhan khula , panchi ura’ is the Hindi version of ‘pagla hawa badol dine’ which is used in Yugpurush released in 1998. The song is pictured on Manisha Koirala.
- ‘Piyu bole,piya bole’ is the Hindi Version of ‘Phuley phuley dholey dholey’ pictured on Vidya Balan in Parineeta which released in 2005 and starred Saif Ali Khan opposite to Vidya Balan.
You must have heard all the songs but then you might not have noticed that these songs were Tagore inspired. ☺
