West Bengal’s gets its first floating market in Kolkata

To most of us, markets mean an air-conditioned supermarket with groceries, fruits, fish, meat etc. stacked away in shelves and freezers. Some may even think of the innumerable shopping malls towering over the city. However, this mentality is about to change with the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) all set to introduce the first floating market in the state in the southern fringes of Kolkata.

While adding to the attraction of Kolkata, it is primarily aimed at rehabilitating the vendors displaced during the widening of the E.M. Bypass.

The market is about to set up on a water body near Patuli at a cost of nearly Rs. 9 crore. The market will be open for 24 hours with 114 boats with stalls selling vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, cereals, rice, edible oils and tea, according to a KMDA official.

Floating markets in India is uncommon and it is perhaps their rarity that will turn this market as a popular tourist attraction as well.

Kolkata is gearing up for a proud display of a unique floating market on its water front, in January next year.
