The West Bengal Government has come up with a new Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Enforcement (DRI&E) to investigate tax frauds and enforce tax laws. The main motive behind setting up of such a separate directorate is to solve tax evasion cases and to deal with tax frauds more efficiently. The State Finance Department has brought out a gazette notification informing about the new directorate which will investigate tax evasion cases and enforce tax laws. The DRI&E will be headed by an IAS Officer and three special directors of Special Commissioner of Revenue ranks. The directorate will also have 17 additional directors, four joint directors, one chief vigilance officer, two vigilance officers, five investigating officers, and other employees. The DRI&E will investigate tax fraud cases of its own and cases referred by the State Government. It will function as the nodal agency and enquire if government employees of the Revenue Directorates are involved in tax evasion cases. The directorate will also be an advisor to the State Government for taking required measures to deal with tax evasion.
