Imagine watching the football World Cup, sitting in a quiet restaurant in Russia, having a quintessential Bengali meal of daal-bhaat (rice and pulses), machher jhol or korma and keema singara, in the land of the erstwhile Tsars.
Thanks to two from Kolkata, Pradyot Mukherjee from Raja Bagan and Sumana Mukherjee from Kidderpore, this dream might come true. As many Bengalis from Kolkata are traveling to Moscow to watch the World Cup, the Mukherjees in Russia are all geared up at their restaurants in posh localities of Moscow to spread the buffet Bengal style. But wait, how did the duo land up in Moscow?
After studying at the Tula State University of Moscow, Pradyot took a bold step and decided to start his own business on Russian soil. He started as a dealer in a multi-national company and by 2001, when he married Sumana, they were confident with starting their own business which, however, was no cake walk. Back in 2012, they opened ‘Talk of the Town’ and a year later ‘Fusion Plaza’.
This year, with the Russian city hosting the World cup Football, this couple from Bengal are ready with their special Indian menu card to satiate the hunger of Indian, especially Bengali, fans who have landed in Russia to watch the World Cup. The Mukherjee’s haven’t forgotten their roots in spite of living for 27 years in Russia. And the best thing is, they haven’t taken up Russian citizenship. According to them, the couple they want to build an ‘a city of joy’ within Russia.
Their endeavor to bring Bengal on the on the world map strikes another chord during Durga Puja when they arrange one of the largest pujas of Moscow. And the interesting part is, even the Russians participate in the dhhunuchi dance.
