Visva Bharati to form women’s sports team

The Visva Bharati has recently taken a decision to form separate sports teams for women for the first time now. This decision is being taken following an incident where a 20-year-old girl, a student of the university was not allowed to be part of a cricket tournament with boys. Megha Das Kabiraj, the 20-year-old girl is a second-year undergraduate student who is doing her course in Zoology at Siksha Bhavana. Megha is a district-level cricketer for the last two years and she wanted to take part in the inter-Bhavana tournament and was even enlisted as a player. However, later her enlistment was called off in the last moment on grounds of risk of injury and possibility of anyone misbehaving with her and she was not allowed to play in the tournament. Megha was shocked by the reasons why she was dropped from the tournament and she wrote to the Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty for taking necessary actions. A decision was then taken to form a separate women’s sports team. Narayan Mondal, a director of Visva-Bharati who is in charge of the sports board said,

The girl had come to me. But we couldn’t allow her to play cricket with men as per university norms. After she approached the VC, a decision was taken to have women sports teams in cricket, kho-kho, volleyball, and football.
