Vaidehi to play Tagore’s lady-love in a new film

Popular Marathi actress Vaidehi Parshurami is all ready to play Rabindranath Tagore’s love interest in a new film which is slated to go on the floor this September. The film will be directed by Ujjwal Chattopadhyay. According to sources, Tagore has stayed in the house of eminent doctor Atamaram Pandurang in Mumbai, sometimes in the late 1870s before leaving for Britain to study law.

Atamaram was a close friend of the Tagore’s elder brother Satyendranath, who believed that the young Rabindranath would pick up some British etiquette by staying with the doctor’s family. During his stay in Mumbai, Atamaram’s daughter Annapurna returned from Britain and was appointed by her father to teach English to Rabindranath. Annapurna was 20 and Rabindranath was 17 and a deep platonic relationship developed between the two. Atamaram, however, was against their relationship probably because of caste differences.

The film titled ‘Nalini’ will have actor Saheb Bhattacharya playing the young Rabindranath, while Vaidehi Parshurami has been cast in the title role. The film will be produced by Priyanka Chopra and it will be a trilingual project in Bengali, English, and Marathi. The makers have reportedly got assent from Visva Bharati to shoot the film.
