User friendly escalators, now at Kolkata Metro

New Year comes with new expectations, new promises and new challenges for everyone. This new year is also coming with a happy note for every commuter of metro rail. Metro Railway has ordered 11 new escalators apart from the five escalators which will replace the ones at Dumdum station. These escalators are not same with the existing ones. The new ones will be user friendly and they would be having broader approach at the bottom to benefit the elderly and the physically challenged people. In the new ones, the elderly people will get time to adjust themselves after entering and the stair will not start abruptly from the bottom. The Metro Rail Authority expects, by the next six months the installation of the 16 escalators would be completed. The work is underway on one of these and it is expected to be operational by January. The remaining four and the other eleven will be operational at different stations from July, next year. The escalators will be between the platforms and the mezzanine floors. Some stations will get two and some will get one escalator.
