One of the best things about India is that our country welcomes everyone with open arms. Even if someone doesn’t belong to this country, that person will become an integral part of us in no time!
That’s the beauty of India and you can’t deny it. In case you are in doubt, then help me throw some light to what i am saying... check out the list of 10 items that you thought were Indian! This will seriously blow your mind!
Chai – While we Indians are addicted to our chai, the truth is that tea is originated in China and was popularized during the British rule in India.
Our bae ‘Samosa’ - Surprised? This triangular delight which is everyone’s favourite snack did not originate in India. It travelled in India with the Mughals during the 14th century and it was called ‘Sambosa’ and not samosa.
Kites or Patang- Indian’s love flying kites. We all have memories of flying kites on Baisakhi but not everyone knows that Kites were not invented in India. It was invented in China and later the concept was introduced in India.
Bata shoes or Chappals- Sorry to pop the bubble, but Bata is not an Indian company. Many of us believe that Bata is an Indian retailer, but the company is from Czech Republic and was invented in the year 1894 by the Bata Family. It is not at all desi and has more than 5000 retail shoes in 60 countries.
Colgate Toothpaste- At some point or the other we have used Colgate and we still do. This company was introduced in New York but has now shifted to Singapore with its manufacturing units in India.
Rajma Chawal- I always thought RajmaChawal is our desi Punjabi Item grown in India. But neither Rajma nor its yummy combination is our product. Rajma or Kidney beans are purely a Mexican food item and we can’t stop crying..!
Star Plus- One might think that Star plus is purely Indian or Hindi. But the real truth is this famous channel was an English channel in the early 90’s. Star Plus from its inception in 1992 is a New York Based Company.
Horlicks - We all have drank Horlicks in our life. Every Indian mom relies on this health drink till now. Well Horlicks is not Indian, it was found by William and James Horlicks and this foreign health drink is manufactured by a UK based company.
Hand Knitting- Our grandmother’s favourite pastime or hobby came from the land of mysteries in Egypt.
Biryani- Biryani is loved by all. There is no one in India who “doesn’t” love this savoury dish! it is famous all across the nation. But historians believe that Biryani was brought to India by the Mughal invaders.
And we all thought that these products were Desi! Amazed?
