There was a generation when Bollywood movies ran in theatres for years. Gradually with time, the time span decreased from years to months to weeks to days. A movie hardly runs for a week at the theatre today. The top five longest running movies in the history of Bollywood are:
5 – Barsaat – Released in 1949, this Raj Kapoor and Nargis starrer is a masterpiece in Indian cinema and ran for 2 years.
4 – Kismet – Released in 1943, this movie was written and directed by Gyan Mukherjee, and featured Mumtaz Shanti, Ashoke Kumar and Shah Nawaz. It is one of the priceless movies of Indian Cinema. The movie ran for 3 years.
3 – Mughal-e-Azam - Mughal-e-Azam is one of the legendary films ever made in world cinema! The Dilip Kumar and Madhubala starrer released in 1960. This National Award winning film ran for a span of 3 years.
2 – Sholay – Needless to say, Sholay is a landmark film which broke all the records of running for the longest time in theatres till 1975. Ramesh Sippy directed this Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bhaduri, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar and Amzad Khan starrer. Sholay was re-released in 3D version in 2014. Breaking all records, the film ran for 5 years when it first released in 1975.
1 – DilwaleDulhania Le Jayenge: Directed by the legendary Yash Chopra, this Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer created a world record for running for the longest time in a theatre. Released in 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge broke all records for running at the Maratha Mandir for continuous 1009 weeks. In fact, Maratha Mandir created history by running DDLJ for 1009 weeks. DDLJ still runs at the Maratha Mandir daily at 11:30 am.
