It is often heard that the relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and Leo Tolstoy was pretty cordial even though they didn’t meet in person. During the time of Soviet Russia, Tagore, who was inspired by the revolutionary thinking of Tolstoy had visited the USSR in 1930 and was then gifted with the death mask of Tolstoy. The item was fondly treasured in the campus of Viswa Bharati ever since.
On the arrival of our president Ram Nath Kovind this week, this item was showcased in the Rabindra Bharati Museum. “We are glad to showcase our treasured possession in front of the president. His mere presence in our museum is hugely appreciated by us.”’ Said Nilanjan Banerjee, special officer of Rabindra Bhavana.
Tagore, who was an admirer of Russian literature and adored all the works of Tolstoy had established a separate section of the library in Visva Bharati for Tolstoy’s work. He had developed a Shantiniketan as a huge learning centre of different languages, including Russian. Even today, Tagore and Tolstoy remains to be the greatest contributor in literature of all times.
