To Tagore, With Love Tomatino

Spain, the exotic land of tomatino, flamenco and paella. Spain reminds us of football, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Corboda, the mosque in Andalusia and so many more. Now, what if I tell you the second most favourite foreign writer in Spain was our very own Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore!

Yes, you read it right. The academic from the University of Salamanca chose Rabindranath Tagore as the specific person and moment in history, who influenced Spain. Academic Jorge Diego Sanchez dwelt on popular perceptions and histories as he traced the ties between the two countries.

In 1927, Tagore was described as the second most favourite foreign writer in Spain in one of the leading papers. But by 2011 he is described as ‘a pitiful case of oblivion’, Diago Sanchez said at The Bengal Club Library Talk. Indian’s perception of Spain has changed over the years, but the Spanish continue to equate India with Bollywood and mysticism and of course Kobiguru who have been an inspiration for students of literature for years.
