Have you heard of the deserted station ‘Begun Kodar’ of Purulia? You may or may not have. According to research, this tiny place is the perfect gateway for spirits and ghosts. Begun Kodar is situated near Ayodhya hills and it is rumored to be haunted for over 40 years. This deserted station is situated in between Kotshila-Muri, under the South-Eastern Railways, known as ‘the spooky station’ of Purulia. Surrounded by paddy fields, with no signs of Human Life evident for miles, this station and its building convey a strange and forbidding atmosphere.
Back in the 40’s, this station was a boon for the neighboring villages such as Dangal, Bamniya, Beladi, Kanudi, Durku, and Patratu, but soon the blessing turned out to be a curse. In no time, both the passengers and neighbors left the place and never returned. This ‘haunted’ railway station had been closed since then and was listed by railways as one of the 10 ‘spooky’ stations in India. Rumors of many paranormal activities scared off the railway staff , they would all leave the station by 5 pm.
The scent of a ghost:
Rumour has it that back in 1967, a stationmaster died after he saw an apparition of a woman in white. The next stationmaster who was appointed quit his job within a day and along with him, others left too. Since then no train had an ‘official’ stoppage at this deserted station, until the present decade. The station was finally re-opened by Mamata Banerjee during her tenure as the Union Railways Minister. Since then trains have been stopping at this obscure station and passengers use it till 5 pm.
