The holy birthplace of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, “Gour Gangar Desh” .
Is also known as Naodah, this historic city is the erstwhile stronghold of Bengal’s Sena dynasty rulers. Nabadwip was once a revered and renowned seat of knowledge and wisdom and thus it was aptly named ‘The Oxford of Bengal’. A center for learning since the early days, there was a flourishing culture filled with knowledge and wisdom; this place was especially renowned for the scholarly works.
Nabadwip, located in the Nadia district, exudes an aura of mystique and nostalgia. One can get easily enticed by the spiritual essence of the numerous holy temples.
The name Nabadwip suggests “9 islands” in the Bengali language and the islands are named Antardwip, Simantadwip, Rudradwip, Madhyadwip, Godrumdwip, Ritudwip, Jahnudwip, Koladwip, Modadrumdwip.
Nabadwip is the abode of a number of temples and there are popular shrines in and around such as the Sonar Gouranga Temple, Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, and the Dwadash Shiva Temple.
The city also boasts of a flair for celebration. The best time to visit the city and enjoy the local culture is in the month of November to celebrate the annual Rash Utsav or the Dol Purnima in March.
