Strength is Life, Weakness is Death
All the power is within you. You can do anything
The whole world probably knows this man for his famous ‘Chicago Speech’ and for introducing Hinduism to the western world; he is none other than Swami Vivekananda, the great revolutionary Indian Hindu monk.
Narendranath Dutta, as he was known in his childhood days, went on to become the chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa.
Impressed by his wisdom and knowledge, Ajit Singh, Maharaja of Khetri, Rajasthan aptly named him “Vivekananda” which means “the bliss of discerning wisdom” in Sanskrit…His Absolute was a person’s own higher self, and he believed that serving humanity is the noblest endeavor.
Upon enrolling himself at Scottish Church College, he was exposed to Western philosophy, Christianity and science. Soon a feeling of social reform became a key aspect of Vivekananda’s thought. He felt a need to inculcate a sense of rationalism among the people of India and decided to amalgamate Hinduism and western ideologies for the progress of mankind.
He is particularly known for his strong willpower; and one would have probably noticed his eyes first which reflected mysticism, high intellect, esoteric yet a profound sense of calmness, which he claimed to have acquired through rigorous practice of ‘Brahmacharya’.
Upon his return to India with a small group of western disciples in 1897, Vivekananda founded Ramakrishna Mission for social services. Both Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission have their headquarters at Belur Math.
As we celebrate the 156th birth anniversary of Vivekananda, we should all strive to ‘Arise! Awake! And stop not until the goal is reached’.
