The South-eastern railway plans to construct a fourth line from Howrah towards Tikiapara. The decision for the fourth line was taken as the sub-urban trains were detained for 20-30 minutes between Tikiapara and Howrah. The down trains now run behind schedule, but they run quite well till Santragachhi, thinks go down from Tikiapara. The down trains are stopped to make way for the up trains that leave at their scheduled time.
There is already a fourth line from Howrah towards Tikiapara but it runs towards the sorting yard across the flyover, the new line will branch left from the flyover. Howrah’s Route Relay Interlocking has reached its optimal capacity; hence a new panel has to be fashioned for the new line. The up trains departing Howrah station will be using the fourth line, that is, the ones leaving from the platform number 21, 22 and 23. The new line is said to be completed within 2-years.
