The first IIT Campus outside India will be set up in Zanzibar, Tanzania. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement has been signed on Wednesday, July 5, between India's education ministry, IIT Madras, and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar.
The External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and the President of Zanzibar, Hussein Mwinyi, were present on that day. Presently, S. Jaishankar is on a four-day visit to Tanzania to hold high-level talks and co-chair the 10th Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart. The programmes on this campus will start in October this year.
The External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, tweeted about this agreement. He wrote, "I witnessed the signing of the agreement on the setting up of the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus. We appreciate the President (Dr. Hussein Al Mwinyi) gracing the occasion, as well as the presence of his ministers. This historic step reflects India's commitment to the Global South."
This partnership will fulfil the critical present requirements of the region while bringing the top-ranked educational skills of IITM to a prominent location in Africa.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), "The academic programmes, curricula, student selection aspects, and pedagogical details will be provided by IIT Madras, whereas the capital and operating expenditure will be met by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania."
It was also said that "IIT Madras degrees will be awarded to the students enrolled at this campus. The state-of-the-art interdisciplinary degrees are expected to attract a diverse cohort and will include students from Africa and other countries as well. Indian students are also eligible to apply to these programmes.
The establishment of the IIT Campus is expected to improve India's standing overseas, strengthen its diplomatic connections, and broaden IIT Madras' global outreach. Due to the diversity of the professors and students from the foreign campus, it will also help to enhance IIT Madras education and research performance significantly.
