After being selected in the ‘best shorts’ competition in both California and The Bozeman Film Festival in Montana, an 18-mins English language short film titled as ‘The Disguise’ was featured in the South Asian Short Film Festival in Kolkata on 26th March. Directed by Sandeep. A. Verma who has previously directed another feature film named ‘Manjunath’ and written by Riya Mukherjee, has spent 23 years in the broadcasting, music, co-writing, and producing short films namely, ‘Kahanibaaz’, ‘The Virgins’ and a feature film named, ‘Good Morning Sunshine’.
The film is said to be about two women from London, one being conservative and other one progressive came to witness a hate crime on the road, which forces change their idea of identity and the choices they had to make because of the growing cultural fanaticism everywhere. The film features Naomi Willow and Adriana Grigoriev as the lead characters. The film has been attempted to not give an outright answer, rather it has been left open-ended intentionally by both the director and writer.
Verma first got interested in the project because of its ‘intimate’ nature and ‘Shelf-life’. According to the reports, Riya Mukherjee says the reason she opted the film to be shot in London, was to show that the tension of cultural insensitiveness is not just brewing in this country, but the world too.
