Bengal left another mark in the global spectrum after Soumya Das hailing from Payradanga in Nadia district made India proud after winning the title of Mr. Universe 2019 organised by the world fitness federation at Seoul, South Korea. Soumya achieved the feat after 67 long years since any Bengali won the iconic title. The history of Bengali bodybuilders in the world stage dates back to Monotosh Roy, who won the title back in the year 1951, followed by ‘Pocket Hercules’ Monohar Aich in the consecutive year. Soumya became the third bodybuilder from West Bengal to achieve this feat.
An obese kid during his childhood, Soumya was prey to being constantly bullied by his classmates for his weight. Dejected by his surroundings, he was compelled to join the gym early to gain a fit shape. He devoted his time to following a strict diet and exercise for attaining his desire. At the early age of sixteen, he won the title of Mr.Nadia. After the significant achievement, Soumya made up his mind to train for the world stage. Being from a middle-class family, he had to work as body trainer to bear the expensive costs for sincerely training his body. “I am proud that my effort and hard work paid off,” Soumya said after winning the much-acclaimed title. He has decided to devote rest of his life to bodybuilding and fitness training. “From a city that has such strong competitors in bodybuilding history, it pains me that no one pays much heed to this profession here,” he explained his disappointment at the reluctance of the bodybuilding industry in West Bengal. His parents, friends and trainer were present at the airport to welcome him with musical band and Garlands after he touched down at the Netaji Subhash International terminal on Wednesday.
