Sur Jahan had started back in 2011 and since then 26 countries and 12 Indian States participated in the festival. The festival provides not only a platform to musicians, but is also a strong ground to the traditional handicrafts artisans helping them to showcase their creativity. The music festival provides a wide opportunity for various collaborations and enriches connectivity which leads to a more vibrant assimilation of art. Hence Sur Jahan is a non-ticketed program which invites people of all kinds and of all genres irrespective of their financial states. Sur Jahan promotes ‘Music for All and Music for Peace’ bringing people who truly love music to come, witness and participate.
The third day had similar three slotted workshops from, 11am-12pm, 12-1pm, 1-2pm. The first was taken by Tuuletar, the women gang from Finland who had got their break by winning the top most honour at Austria’s Vokal Total Competition. Following them were the Ethiopian gang Aste Tewodros Project named after Emperor Tewodros II. They were even selected in the ballot for the 59th Grammy Awards in two separate categories. Cheikh Lo conducted the last workshop for the season. Initially a guitarist as well as a drummer and a follower of Baye Fall, Cheikh Lo is a musician of peace on a mission.
Folks of Bengal took the stage from 6pm being the first one to start the concert. The group knocked off with their powerful performance showcasing the various aspects of Bengal’s music celebrating the diversity and richness of the state’s culture and heritage. 7pm - 8pm was the last concert slot for Sur Jahan 2018 which was taken by Hungarian group Muzsikas. The group performed in various renowned concert halls including, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Carnegie Hall and Barbican Hall etc. Pieces of their music have also been featured in movies like, Only Yesterday, The English Patient and Music Box. Filmed by BBC, the band even made music for ‘Dancing Room,’ a contemporary dance piece performed in various theatres in England. Muzsikas had been awarded with the Hungarian State award for artists, the Kossuth Prize and even Womex award for world music in 2018. Their performance mesmerised the audience while making them a little emotional at the same time as after a short closing ceremony the 8th edition of Sur Jahan concluded.
Music brings unity; music develops the youth and has a huge influence in the cultural development of a person. Music concerts like Sur Jahan definitely brings people from all over the city and ties them with the string of music. Waiting for the 9th edition, Sur Jahan as a whole was an immense success.
