Sur Jahan – World Peace Music Festival 2018, 8th edition- Chapter I

Sur Jahan which was formerly known as Sufi Sutra is a World Peace Music Festival which celebrates the cultural plurality when it comes to music and celebrates musical exchanges. Bands from various parts of the world come to the city of joy to celebrate the love for music. This year Kolkata witnessed the 8th edition of the festival. The main motto of the festival is to spread the notion of “Music for All and Music for Peace.”

Various musical troupes inaugurated the festival including musicians from Alipurduar, famous chhau troupe from Purulia and folk troupe from Bardwan. The inauguration was followed by a concert where international bands from Italy and Poland performed for an hour each.

Atse Tewodros was the first to take the stage with its members, Gabriella Ghermandi, Antenah Teklemariam Barago, Endres Hassen Ahmed, Misale Legesse Mutela, Tommaso Ruggero, Camilla Misso, Fabrizio Giuseooe Puglisi. The main performer Gabrilla Ghermandi is a born Ethiopian and has acquired skills in Ethiopian and Italian fusion folk music. Aste Tewodros was the winner of the the “Battle of Bands in 2015 and their album “Ethiopia Celebrating Emperor Tewodros II” had also been in ballot for the 59th Grammy awards in two different categories. Their performance was followed by Muzykanci, a band from Poland with its members Joanna Slowinska, Jan Slowinski, Jacek Halas, Alicja Choromanska Hatas and Stanislawslowinski. They are one of the most authentic folk music bands in Poland. They perform in the world’s biggest music festivals and also showcase themselves in small village weddings. They are known to have their own unique presentation style for uniting nations and bridge various cultures. The bands mainly perform dark folk tales of their homeland, and have performed in several concerts while being winners of “Grand Prix of Polish Radio and Euro Folk Festival”. They have even been selected as Folk Fonogram of the year.

The crowd consisted of people of all genres and classes which proved that music is indeed one of the best mediums to unite people and that Bengal has always taken up proactive initiatives in bringing people together through the common medium of art and culture.
