Stock Exchange and Calcutta University initiate a tie-up

The iconic trading floor of the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) will soon transform into a classroom for postgraduate students interested in money matters, and in the tricks of capital and investment. Leading market experts will conduct these sessions. This is in lieu of a tie-up initiated between the CSE and Calcutta University to form a Centre of Excellence, which will introduce a one-year post-graduate diploma in portfolio management services from this week. So far, 32 students have enrolled for this course.

The classes will be held in the evening at the trading floor of the CSE which has been lying idle for almost a decade now. The faculty will comprise of members of the commerce department of CU and some veteran executives of the Stock Exchange. The course includes corporate financial analysis, portfolio management, and asset evaluation. Besides these, there will be subjects such as depository, stock exchange functioning, bank functioning, and mutual funds.

Former president of the CSE and investment expert Mr. Ajit Kumar Roy feels it is a good move, although it will not help reverse the fortunes of the CSE. He remembers that such courses were tried back in the 90’s but university authorities weren’t aware of the importance of these courses back then. CU Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee feels that this course would offer better job opportunities.
