State Government’s Extra Support for Durga Puja 2019

It's just a month’s wait for the grandest festival of Bengal and everybody is counting days. The puja committees are almost in their last leg of their preparations. The state government recently announced its share of work in the city’s biggest festival. The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee declared that the donation to the Puja Committees has been increased to Rs. 25, 000 from Rs 10, 000; the puja committee with all female members will get an extra amount of Rs. 5, 000 from the police department. She also said that both the CESC and WBSEDCL will give a 25% concession to Puja committees of the state. All these arrangements were announced at the coordination meeting for Durga Puja held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. The meeting was attended by the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, Director General of West Bengal Police, several ministers, religious representatives and representatives of Puja Committees were present. In the meeting, the CM proposed to eradicate the VIP pass culture and said,

“It is my request not to make any VIP passes. It is not right when a huge number of people are waiting in line and a few people with a card get in from another entrance and visit the Puja pandal without any hazard.”

The CM stated to the state Fire Minister that she doesn’t want to see VIP passes for the Sreebhumi Durga Puja. Also, she gave strict instructions to Mayor Firhad Hakim and state PWD minister Aroop Biswas that there should be no VIP passes in their areas. She also declared the date of this year’s Puja Carnival held on the Red Road and that is on October 11th.
