The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has started the process of installation of sprinklers on the islands situated at Southern Avenue of South Kolkata. The sprinklers will water the trees and plants in those islands which have been planted there as a part of green conservation in the city under Urban Forestry department of the KMC. The sprinklers will be used twice daily for watering the trees and plants.
Debasish Kumar, Member, Mayor-in-Council (Parks & Gardens) said,
We are using three to four sprinklers depending on the number of trees in each of the islands at Southern Avenue. They are controlled in such a manner so that the entire process is carried out scientifically. We have plans to install sprinklers at more places in the city, wherever feasible.
KMC currently has 12 vehicles to water plants and trees of the city which operate daily. Since the new Mayor of Kolkata assumed office, a separate department for preservation and maintenance of the green cover in the city ‘Urban Forestry’ has been set up. The KMC also has a team of dedicated gardeners who carry out the trimming of trees from time to time to make sure that the trees do not become too heavy so that it gets uprooted. KMC has further plans for urban forestry in the city for which it has already formed a committee which is headed by Mayor-in-Council Debasish Kumar.
