Special Police Observer ensures peaceful polling

The Election Commission (EC) in order to carry out the polling peacefully in Bengal has appointed Vivek Dubey as the Special Police Observer (SPO). Dubey is a retired IPS officer of the Andra Pradesh cadre of 1981 batch. Soon after being appointed by the Election Commission, Vivek Dubey, the Special Police Observer of Bengal and also Jharkhand, reached West Bengal on March 31st. Since then he has met all the political parties and held meetings with them regarding the polling operations. Dubey has also held video conferences with the District Magistrates and SPs of the districts for collecting reports about the situation of their concerned areas. He even attended meetings with top government officials including Director General (DG) of police, Chief Secretary and Home Secretary. Vivek Dubey said, “My objective is to ensure that people do not get terrified while approaching the polling booths.

He has simultaneously traveled to Siliguri in North Bengal and Jharkhand to assess the current scenario of the places ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He had recommended deployment of CRPF along with local Police Forces during the first phase of polling in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar due to which 79 companies of CRPF were deployed. It is being assumed that these forces will also be deployed during the second phase of elections.
