Our beloved Dada aka Sourav Ganguly turns 49! Ganguly, popularly known as ‘Maharaja of Indian Cricket’ as well as ‘Prince of Kolkata’ was born on 8thJuly, 1972 in Calcutta to Chandidas and NirupaGanguly.
The former national cricket team captain is currently the 39th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The man of many monikers is regarded as one of the world's leading batsmen and one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history.
He burst into the international cricket scene with a dazzling century in his first test outing, at no less a venue than Lord’s, the Mecca of cricket. The year was 1996. Equally spectacular was his famous ‘shirt wave’ at the same venue in 2002.Though criticized by some, his numerous fans loved the gesture and still remember it fondly. A defining moment in Indian cricket, undoubtedly.
Sourav has the distinction of being only the third batsman to score a century in each of his first two Test inning. He showed his mettle in the ODI format by winning four consecutive Man-of-the-Match awards in 1997.
In the 1999 Cricket World Cup, he played a knock of 183 runs against Sri Lanka and was involved in a legendary 318-run partnership with Rahul Dravid, which remains the highest overall partnership score in World Cup history.
The left-handed opening batsman has been anointed 'God of off-side' by teammate Rahul Dravid and is India's second highest run-scorer in ODIs, with a tally of 11,363 runs which includes 22 hundreds and 72 half-centuries.
After retiring from all formats of cricket, he is currently a cricket administratorand was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) till he was elected the president of BCCI.
Even as an administrator he has achieved new heights and pushed the idea of first-ever day &night Test match against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in 2019.
