The nation’s largest red light area in Kolkata, on 7th August celebrated Raksha Bandhan to promote communal harmony. An event was organized by Durbar Mahila Samanvaya Committee, one of the largest community-based organizations of sex workers. Sex workers from Sonagachi celebrated Rakhi Purnima by tying Rakhis to passers-by.
With 17,000 sex workers in Sonagachi expected to participate in the event, the mentor of the committee Bharati Dey stated “It will also help the sex workers remove stigma (surrounding their profession) when they approach people with such events. We are organising the event with their help and participation. Not only sex workers of Sonagachi, others from different red light areas have also been invited”.
The organization also invited politicians and stalwarts from various walks of life to grace the occassion.
"All political, non-political people, officials and intellectuals were invited to attend the event. Our main motto is to celebrate every festival with everyone." Seema Bhogla, a sex worker said.
"We want to show the world that being a sex worker we can enjoy as any other human being. Also, like every year we are also planning to celebrate Durga Puja here" she added.
