Solar scientists have warned about an impending massive solar storm rushing toward Earth. It could affect the planet's magnetosphere.
What is a Solar Storm?
A solar storm is generated by explosions on the surface of the sun. It releases a stream of ionized particles and energy throughout the solar system. Solar storms have a significant impact on the earth's magnetic field and can affect the orbiting satellites.
ISRO experts (Indian Space Research Organisation) have instructed the operators of India’s satellites to stay alert. Indian scientists closely monitor the situation. The storm is expected to hit within a few days. However, they have not yet provided definitive statements about its potential effects.
A solar storm struck Earth, causing auroras to light up the skies of the Northern Hemisphere, along with radio blackouts and power outages in May. That storm also affected Earth's magnetic field, although no major damage was reported. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics Director Annapurni Subramaniam said, “A solar storm occurred in May. The recent solar flare's intensity is comparable to that of the previous storm. We fear that this could impact the magnetosphere, but we need to wait and see. It will take a few days for the storm to reach Earth.”
