On Friday the West Bengal State Transport Minister inaugurated the smart gates at the Millennium ferry ghat by swiping a common transport card. The state planned to streamline the transport system by using a single smart card for every public transport. The authorities suggested to include the Metro railways under the single card scheme as well. It can be used to travel by bus, tram, and ferry.
The state transport authorities reported that the Millennium Ghat has recorded a loss of Rs 30-40 lakh annually, which can be stopped now with the help of the smart gates. Apart from the Millennium Ghat, Fairlie and Howrah’s ferry ghat has also installed smart gates. The government hopes that this measure will help in raising the state’s revenues. People traveling through these public transports will also be benefitted by it. West Bengal Transport Corporation has already discussed the matter with Metro authorities and they have agreed to it as well.
