Sewer treatment plants are now being made mandatory for new housing complexes in Bidhannagar by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Municipal Corporation has made it clear that no new building plan will be cleared if it doesn’t have a sewer treatment plant. In order to have a proper sewage disposal structure, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has come up with such a decision during its recent meeting. The municipal corporation has also come up with a major plan of establishing and installing a new drainage system in areas of Baguiati-Kestopur, which is spread over wards 1-28. An estimated cost of RS 330 crore has been sanctioned too and a private consultancy firm is currently preparing the scheme of the project. There are open drains in the surrounding areas of wards 1-28 which falls under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, and the corporation has chalked out a plan already to cover those open drains with concrete slabs. The construction works of the underground drainage system, however, will commence after monsoon. Baguiati and its surrounding areas started to develop during the early ‘90s and lakhs of people have settled there since then due to which a proper drainage system is an urgent requirement there.
