The Sealdah Flyover is currently undergoing safety audit and repairs, and is temporarily shut for traffic for the next few days. A detailed health check-up of the flyover is being conducted by the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) which is responsible for carrying out maintenance of the flyover. Engineers of CMDA have already started inspection and will also conduct load test on the Sealdah flyover. The engineers will be mounting loaded trucks of capacity between 25 tonnes and 75 tonnes in order to test the load-bearing capacity of the iron rods in the concrete structure. The flyover will again reopen for traffic on August 18. The traffic department is diverting vehicles travelling on this route through various other stretches. Due to this diversions, tram services along Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, M G Road, Bidhan Sarani and Lenin Sarani is temporarily suspended. The Kolkata Police has reported that during these four days of closure, the stretch of the flyover between M G Road Crossing and Beliaghata Main Road Crossing will remian closed. Vehicles coming from South Kolkata won’t face much difficulties since the Beliaghata Main Road is open for traffic and people trying to reach the Sealdah station won’t face much problems. Vehicles which will be approaching Sealdah from North Kolkata will have options to avail M G Road, Amherst Street, B B Ganguly Street to reach Koley Market. Vehicles approaching the Sealdah station is being diverted from Rajabazar Crossing for availing Narkeldanga Main Road, Canal East Road and Beliaghata Main Road. The passenger buses are also following the same routes. The traffic department has predicted traffic congestions in some parts of the city around Sealdah and has requested people to plan their journey with sufficient time in hand.
