The Sealdah Flyover which was temporarily closed from August 15th for a detailed health check-up and repairing works has reopened after four days. The traffic was allowed to pass through the flyover since the evening of August 18th after CMDA engineers completed inspections and load tests on the Sealdah flyover. Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), which is responsible for carrying out maintenance of the flyover, mounted loaded trucks of capacity between 25 tonnes and 75 tonnes in order to test the load-bearing capacity of the iron rods in the concrete structure. A detailed inspection of the flyover’s structure was carried out by engineers using the various gadgets. An engineer who was supervising the project, said, “The tests have been conducted. Based on the report, the repair work would start. The dates for the repair work are yet to be finalized”. According to the engineers, the flyover could be shut again, restricting normal traffic flow for repairing works. The traffic department had diverted vehicles travelling on this route through various other stretches during the closure. Due to this diversions, tram services along Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, M G Road, Bidhan Sarani and Lenin Sarani were also temporarily suspended.
After the closure ended, a traffic sergeant said, “Traffic had increased manifold on MG Road, Amherst Street and BB Ganguly Street because of the diversion. Those travelling from north Calcutta to reach Sealdah had to go via Koley Market. We are relieved that the pressure would be eased now”.
