The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) had engaged a consulting agency to study the health of various bridges and flyovers of the city following the incident of Majerhat bridge collapse in September last year. The state government has also prepared a list of 15 bridges for structural inspection. The consulting agency in charge of the inspections has reported that the Vidyapati Setu, popularly known as Sealdah bridge is not in its best shape and requires repair. Firhad Hakim, State Urban Development Minister said, “The preliminary report has pointed out that the Sealdah flyover is in need of repair. But the condition is not such that it needs immediate work. We have sought a detailed report from the consulting agency, in which they will specify the areas that need to be repaired". The initial inspection report has already been submitted to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, the detailed report is yet to be finalised after which the tender will be placed in order to start the repairing works of the Sealdah bridge. The Sealdah bridge or Vidyapati Setu was built in the late 1970’s and happens to be one of the busiest bridges of the city which connects north and south Kolkata.
