The State Bank of India (SBI) has brought some changes in its cash withdrawal system for its ATMs across the country. SBI has decided to introduce a one-time password (OTP) based cash withdrawal system for its ATMs. The bank has reported that this OTP based system will be applicable for transactions above Rs 10,000 between 8 pm and 8 am. SBI, India’s largest lender recently twitted on its official twitter handle ‘TheOfficialSBI’ and said, "Introducing the OTP-based cash withdrawal system to help protect you from unauthorized transactions at ATMs. This new safeguard system will be applicable from 1st Jan, 2020 across all SBI ATMs. To know more: http://bit.ly/39gErE2". But, how will this OTP based system work? It’s pretty simple, SBI will generate an OTP for its ATM cardholders and they will receive this OTP on their mobile number registered at the time of initiating the cash withdrawal process at the ATM. This is going to be an additional authentication wall which will protect customers from unauthorised ATM cash withdrawals. However, this OTP facility will not be available for transactions done at ATMs of banks other than SBI since this functionality has not been developed in National Financial Switch (NFS). For withdrawing an amount of Rs 10,000 between 8 pm and 8 am, a customer will now have to enter both the pin of the card and the OTP received in the registered mobile number in order to withdraw the cash. This extra security will protect the customers against the risk of unauthorised transactions and use of skimmed or cloned cards at State Bank ATMs.
