Sayani Das Becomes the First Indian Woman to Swim Across the North Channel

Indian swimmer Sayani Das made history in the swimming category. She is the first Indian woman to cross the North Channel. She swam for nearly 13 hours and 22 minutes. Sayani set out to cross the channel on Friday, August 30th and achieved this record on Saturday.

The North Channel is also known as the Irish or North Irish Channel. To swim in this channel, one must obtain permission from the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association (ILDSA). The swim spans 34.5 kilometers between Northern Ireland and Scotland, but depending on sea conditions, it can extend up to 45 kilometers. Typically, the swim in the North Channel is conducted from June to September.

Indian swimmer Sayani Das has many records in the swimming category:

1. She conquered the notorious Cook Strait in 2024 -
2. She crossed the Molokai Channel from Molokai Island to Oahu (42 km) in 2022 and became the first Indian woman to achieve this feat.
3. She crossed the Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to Southern California (32.3 km) in 2019.
4. She crossed the Rottnest Channel in Western Australia(19.7 km) in 2018.
5. She swam across the English Channel from England to France (33.5 km) in 2017.
