The Health Department of the Government of West Bengal has recently introduced Rota Virus Vaccine (RVV) in all its medical colleges, district and sub-divisional hospitals and health centres to prevent diarrhoea among children. Chandrima Bhattacharya, the Minister of State for Health launched the RVV and talked about introducing it to all the state run medical facilities in order to eradicate diarrhoea. Rotavirus happens to be the leading cause of diarrhoea in children less than five years of age and to prevent the disease from affecting the children, the Health Department has chalked out a detailed plan. The children will be vaccinated with the RVV for better immunization against the virus. The vaccine will be given to the children with a specially manufactured single-use syringe and trained health workers will be conducting the vaccination process. Director of Health Services (DHS) Dr Ajay Chakraborty said, "Our target in the state for the immunization programme is 14.65 lakh infants. Bengal has high coverage of vaccines (95 per cent fully immunized as per HMIS data 2018-19) and it also has strong public health system. It is expected that the acceptance and coverage of RVV will also be high and we will be able to prevent death caused by diarrhoea in the state".
