The Government of Assam has recently used plastic waste for construction of a road in Guwahati’s Narangi Military Station. 1.24 Megatonne of plastic waste were used in making the road. This method of using plastic waste for constructing roads is being undertaken under a pilot project of the Military Engineer Services for road construction. This method of recycling plastic is also in line with the Central Government’s mission against single use plastic and initiative to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste. In this method, plastic wastes are shredded and mixed with heated bitumen for construction of roads. This is a green technology which is used for recycling plastic and also to construct strong roads with it. World Economic Forum’s reports suggest that roads made up of recycled plastic are more durable against extreme weather like floods and heat. These projects aim at reducing plastic waste at one hand and improve the durability of the roads on the other. Also, this method of constructing roads is comparatively cheaper, easier to maintain and it reduces the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans and landfills. Earlier too, 237.652 km of road in Goalpara was constructed by the Assam State government with the help of recycled plastic. On this note, PRO Guwahati, Ministry of Defence tweeted, “In line with the Govt’s mission against #singleuse plastic and initiative to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste, 1.24 MT of waste plastic has been used to construct a road in Narangi Military Station which is a pilot project of MES for road construction
