The Darjeeling Zoo or Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP) has decided to release four red pandas into the Singalila National Park in the month of September this year. The Darjeeling Zoo had previously too released red pandas out in the wild as part of a captive breeding and conservation program which began in 1986. Red Pandas - Sweety and Millie were released into the wild in 2003 and Dolma and Nilam in 2004. West Bengal Zoo Authority secretary Vinod Kumar Yadav said,
The plans have been submitted to the ministry of environment and forest. We have conducted genetic studies, fingerprinting and DNA tests on the four animals.
Yadav added that the habit evaluation for these pandas are already done using drone mapping and satellite images. Angela Glatston, the convener of Global Species Management Plans said,
As part of the global management program, the breeding of red pandas in each continent is managed by regional zoos. Through this, zoos cooperate to optimize the population of red pandas in their facilities. As far as the Darjeeling zoo’s breeding in-captivity program is concerned, they are doing exciting work.
The process of the release of these pandas is a step by step process involving workshops and preparation of species survival studies. Currently, the Darjeeling Zoo has 21 red pandas out of which 13 are female.
