Ration shops to become mini malls

In the Bengal Global Summit held this year, the State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Future Group (one of the leading chains of supermarkets in the country), and decided to convert the ration shops into ‘cheap mini malls’. In these ration shops, the State Food and Supplies Department shall provide branded products which will be available at a lower price than the market rates.

There are around 22,000 ration shops all over the State. Initially, the State Food and Supplies Department are starting with 2,000 ration shops in Barasat and North 24 Parganas. These ration shops shall soon be converted into mini malls within 3 months and depending on how it works the project shall kick off in other districts as well.

Manish Agarwal, the CEO of Future Group has agreed to supply goods to the Government at a reasonable price. Around 800 brands are to be sold at 15-35 % lesser price than the market rates and even electronic goods, food products and personal products shall be readily available in the mini mall.

The primary objective for this initiative by the Government is to make ration shops attractive to the common people.
