The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has predicted rainfall during the new year’s celebration. According to the Met department, light to moderate showers may take place from January 1-3 in various South Bengal districts. Some parts of the South Bengal districts will also receive light rainfall in the next 24 hours. Districts like North 24-Parganas, Nadia, South 24-Parganas have already received scattered rainfall. For the city of Kolkata, the weather department has reported that the temperature is expected to go further down in the next 48 hours which means the people of Kolkata will feel a shivering winter chill in the last few days of 2019. The temperature of the city may even get below 10 degrees. Till now, the lowest temperature that the city has experienced is 12.6 degree Celsius. On the other hand, the North Bengal districts witnessed thick mist in early morning hours, however, it disappeared after sunrise. The weather department has informed that cold waves will hit the South Bengal districts including the city due to which a strong chilling wind will hit particularly during the morning and evening hours. A Met Department official said, "A pressure trough which was formed over Bay of Bengal has led to an incursion of moisture into the state. The cold wind from north-west has been helping to form clouds after coming in contact with the wind which was coming from the Bay of Bengal side. It would bring more rainfall in the beginning of the new year".
