Rain hits Kolkata due to depression

The city of Kolkata is currently experiencing the first heavy downpour of the monsoon and it is most likely to continue for the next few days. The cause behind this sudden rainfall is a depression which has formed over the Bay of Bengal. This depression is currently lying over 230km away from Kolkata and might just get stronger as it passes over the coast of Bengal. The closer the depression will head towards Kolkata; the intensity of the rainfall will get stronger. This downpour will most likely continue till Friday. However, the citizens of Kolkata are quite happy with the rainfall hitting the city because a humid weather condition prevailed in the city for quite sometimes now but is expected to get cooler due to this downpour. G.K. Das, Director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata said, “The depression has formed over the northwest Bay, off the coastlines of Odisha and Bengal. It is very likely to intensify into a deep depression in the next 24 hours and move northwest-wards across the Odisha-Bengal coastline in the next 48 hours”.
