In order to protect the Hooghly embankment at Palta, facing the consequences of the soil erosion, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has approved Rs 129 crore to take immediate actions. This will also help in protecting the endangered Palta Water Works, providing drinking water to more than six million people of Kolkata. The embankment project is likely to commence from Thursday, and it is expected that a lot of obstacles would be faced during the work. The process is initially started with “sheet piling” technology, and soil testing. A decision was taken after the water supply department noticed the erosion threat to the 150-year-old plant supplying drinking water to the entire city, especially the north, central and major parts of south Kolkata. After the funding was ensured, immediate planning was undertaken to begin the restoration work.
