The West Bengal circle of the Department of Posts has recently decided to provide its delivery men with e-scooters for carrying out deliveries. The Postal Department of the West Bengal circle has set a deadline for providing delivery men with 200 e-scooters by March 2020. Gautam Bhattacharya, chief postmaster general of West Bengal said, "The post offices in the three places will be decentralised and there will be a handful of nodal centres where the consignments will be sorted, packed and dispatched by delivery men in e-scooters". These e-scooters will play a significant role in mechanisation and speedy delivery of services of the Postal Department. The e-scooters will initially be introduced in Kolkata, Durgapur and Howrah and later on will be operational throughout the state. Amitabh Singh, Post Master General of Kolkata said, "Postmen in small bags can easily carry 40 or 50 odd letters but it is difficult for them to carry a reasonable number of parcels physically. So, we have already introduced 18 e-scooters for delivery in Central and South Kolkata and will scale it up". The Postal Department has experienced a steady growth after it signed agreements with a number of noted e-commerce companies for delivering items purchased through the online platform. This decision to introduce e-scooters will boost its services.
