Unlike any other horror films in Bollywood, “Pari” stands different and startling too. In the very beginning, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, the so called good boy Bengali character “babai” was seen interacting with Ritabhari on an open terrace as they met to fix their marriage. While coming back, Parambrata along with her parent met an accident in a rainy night. Finally to sort out the issue he happened to meet Ruksana aka Anushka Sharma.
Prosit Roy, director has done a pretty good job in creating the ambience with perpetual rain and presenting the typical north Calcutta buildings with windows and shutters falling off and the street dogs barking in the dark narrow alleys. The shoot was done in Kolkata and surprisingly audience got a chance to see a newer Kolkata this time. Ketan Sodha has done an amazing job with his background score. His work is probably the only thing in “Pari” that intensified the spectacle and the eerie effect.
Increasingly, as Parambrata brought Ruksana home and tried to change her suiting the society, he found Ruksana hiding under the bed hearing the call of the guests, cuts nails with knife and many more. With time, they both developed a feeling of togetherness and finally ended up in having physical intimacy because of which Anushka conceived. Rajat Kapoor alias Quasim Ali as the former head of the anti-satanic cult, did a laudable job. His acting qualities cannot be judged as he was successful in deriving horror just by plucking his simulated eyes and showing a hollow socket.
Ritabhari as her Bollywood debut should concentrate more on her Hindi accents. But her transition of fear for Ruksana to a womanly and motherly feeling was commendable. In the movie “Pari” there are scenes that gives a horrendous effect especially the scene just before the interval that should not be disclosed I guess. Anushka Sharma stood up as the perfect conglomeration of being vulnerable and hot-blooded in “Pari”. Apart from being a producer, her performance stood praiseworthy but it became a bit difficult for the audience to see sweet and sexy Anushka as a petrified spooky and unnerving character.
